Manchester United's owners have decided to scrap the domed roof of their new stadium due to its high cost, The Athletic reports.
According to the source, the existing area of the stadium was not enough to install a roof. Then problems arose during negotiations with the company that owns the land surrounding Old Trafford. The landowners demanded compensation of 400 million pounds sterling, which was several times more than the amount planned by the leaders of Manchester United.
In March, Manchester United announced plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium. One of the main features of the plans was a canopy extending beyond the pitch. At the time, many fans criticised the project, comparing the canopy to a "circus tent".
Since February 2024, Manchester United has been owned by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe. Previously, the sole owners of the club's shares were brothers Avram and Joel Glazer.
