Steven Gerrard slams Arne Slott's comments as former Liverpool star sees Reds legend as next Anfield manager Arne Slott Liverpool S. Gerrard Champions League Premier League Steven Gerrard has claimed that Arne Slott's comments about Liverpool's 2024-25 Champions League season are "untrue", Goal.com reports.
Slot sees benefits of early Champions League exit Gerrard is now watching from afar as Liverpool seek more major trophies in 2026. They are the reigning Premier League champions but look destined to relinquish that crown after enduring unusual domestic struggles. The English top-flight title was secured in dominant fashion last season and Slot has suggested that this is because the Reds crashed out of the Champions League early, benefiting from a round of 16 defeat to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. The Dutchman said: "It won't be a popular opinion, but maybe the reason we won the league last season is because we had to play [PSG] in the round of 16. "They beat us and we had [a whole] week each time to prepare for our next game. "Maybe that helped us. Every coach realizes that the bigger the team you have, the better prepared you are for so many games."
Gerrard slams Slott comments Liverpool were already well on their way to the top of the Premier League when they lost to PSG, and fans were quick to slam Slott for seemingly ignoring their continental failures so easily. Former Reds captain Gerrard is also in that camp, telling TNT Sports: "I can understand the frustration of the fans with that interview. The simple reason is they were 15 points ahead. I think they were already finished in the league at that point. "To say it helped them is a real blow to the fans because the fans have been on that journey. They have paid good money to watch the team in the Champions League. The frustration when you go out of the Champions League as a player or a fan is painful... so to say it helped you when you were already 15 points ahead, you can understand their frustration."
