Former Marseille player and 1993 Champions League winner Eric Di Marco has spoken critically of the French team, which suffered a crushing 3-0 away defeat to Belgian club Brugge and failed to reach the play-off round of the main European Cup for the 2025/2026 season, finishing 25th in the Champions League table.
"Honestly, I don't know what to say. Getting out of the group stage seemed like a realistic goal, but we failed. For Marseille, this is a blow in the Champions League. I've already talked about the 2014 season with zero points, and now we are the first French team not to qualify in the new format. How did we manage to lose like that in Bruges? We are the biggest fools of the evening. I'm tired of it all. As a Marseille fan, I ask myself: why do I still feel this at 62 years old and get upset by these games? Usually people walk away from the results," Di Meco was quoted as saying by RMC Sport.
It is worth noting that after the victory, Brugge was able to advance to the play-off round of the tournament in 19th place.
