Atletico Madrid defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie, setting a club record in the main European Cup competition.
According to Opta Sport statistics portal, the Mattress Makers have scored four goals in the first half of a Champions League match for the first time in their history. Moreover, the red and whites became only the second Spanish team to achieve such a result in a play-off match in the leading European competition, after Barcelona. The Blaugrana managed to do it twice in 2009 (5-2 against Lyon in the 1/8 finals and 4-0 against Bayern in the quarter-finals).
The return match will take place on Wednesday, March 18. The teams will play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
