Armenia's representative in the heavyweight category of the European Weightlifting Championships in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, Varazdat Lalayan, won three gold medals at once with a combined result of 450 kg (210+240) in the snatch, becoming a two-time world champion.
In 2018, he won silver medals at the Youth Weightlifting World Championships (Tashkent) and European Championships (Poland) in the weight category over 105 kg.
A year later, he won gold medals at the World Junior Championships (Suva, Fiji) and the European Championships (Bucharest).
In 2021, he won a gold medal at the European Under-23 Weightlifting Championships in Finland.
In April 2021, at the European Championships in Moscow, he won a bronze medal in the men's over 109 kg weight category with a combined lift of 445 kg. He lifted 205 kg in the snatch and 240 kg in the clean and jerk.
He won a silver medal at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. The result of the combined event was 457 kg. He won small silver medals in both exercises.
At the European Championships held in Sofia in February 2024, Varazdat Lalayan was declared the continental champion for the first time. He lifted 205 kg in the snatch, 250 kg in the clean and jerk, and won a gold medal with a combined result of 455 kg. He was also first in individual exercises.
