A judge has dropped the investigation into two Barcelona fans suspected of causing a stir during a match against Real Madrid in October 2023.
It is noted that Judge Carmen Garcia of the 18th Investigative Court of Barcelona closed the investigation after finding no evidence of hate speech. Moreover, the footballer himself did not hear the screams of these fans.
The Brazilian claimed that he was shouted "monkey" and "stupid monkey", but explained that he did not hear those expressions during the game, but later, when he was shown the video.
One of the two suspects claimed his right not to testify before the investigating judge, while the other identified himself in the recording provided by the police, although he denied that his shouts were offensive. He said he had simply shouted after a controversial incident involving "scoundrel" Vinicius.
A lip-reading expert hired by La Liga claimed the suspects were shouting "f***ing monkey".
The hate crimes prosecutor's office asked to close the case because investigators were unable to determine what exactly the fans were shouting. Moreover, even if their chants were offensive, the rest of the fans did not support them, and the match was not stopped. The judge agreed with the prosecutor's arguments:
