The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is considering paying Fenerbahce compensation for the early termination of Jose Mourinho's contract, with Robert Martinez seen as a potential replacement for the national team's head coach, beIN Sports reports.
According to the source, the FPF is considering appointing the 62-year-old as it wants to approach the 2026 World Cup with "maximum guarantees." The federation is allowing Mourinho to join the Portugal national team regardless of how he performs in the Nations League.
Martinez has been the head coach of the Portugal national team since January 2023, and under his leadership the team won Euro 2024, where it reached the quarter-finals. Portugal will also play Germany in the semi-finals of the Nations League (June 4).
The captain of the Portugal national team is Cristiano Ronaldo, who worked with Mourinho at Real Madrid.
