Former Spanish referee Estrada Fernandez believes that the decision by the VAR system and referee Szymon Marciniak to cancel a penalty awarded against Inter in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona (4:3 OT, 7:6) was wrong.
"For me, this is a clear VAR error, a clear free kick. There were two contacts and the VAR referee stopped at the first one, which was never clearly shown to us. We need a still image to determine exactly when the first contact occurred. But play continued and the second contact was with the foot, inside the penalty area or on the line."
"Since the second contact occurred inside, VAR should have intervened and awarded a penalty. Or tell Marciniak to stick to his decision," Fernandes was quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.
Marcinyak initially awarded a penalty for Henrikh Mkhitaryan's foul on Lamine Yamal, but after a tip from the VAR system, he used the video replay and changed his decision.
