Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in a coma after undergoing surgery for a serious abdominal injury, British media reports. The Nigeria international hit the post in the 88th minute of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the City Ground while attempting to connect with Anthony Elanga's cross.
Awoni, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, came on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare and had only played five minutes before the incident. He received immediate treatment on the pitch and then rejoined the game but limped off for the final 10 minutes of the match. The BBC was among British media outlets to report late on Tuesday that Awoni had been placed in a medically induced coma after the first round of surgery. In a statement issued earlier on Tuesday, Forest said Awoni had undergone surgery and was “recovering well”. “Nottingham Forest can confirm that Taiwo Awoni is currently recovering well following emergency surgery following a serious abdominal injury sustained in the game against Leicester City on Sunday,” the club said.
