Andreas Christensen (29 years old) will not continue to play for Barcelona next season. The club has informed him that it does not plan to continue its cooperation: his contract is valid until June 30, 2026, reports AS.
So, if an interesting offer comes in, the transfer will be done quickly. The club will also save on his relatively high salary (9 million euros before taxes).
There is a serious internal debate within the team about Christensen's continued presence. Hansi Flick has been pleased with the Dane's performance and has placed his trust in him, given that he barely played last season due to injury. However, Deco has been unwavering, especially given his commitment to Ronald Araujo, "a different type of centre-back who offers us more options," as the sporting director noted in an interview.
The team now has five central defenders in both positions, so there was a need to reduce the burden on the team, especially considering the requirements of Financial Fair Play. The main players were Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martínez, who had already extended their contracts. Ronald Araujo and Eric García had a secondary role, although the versatility of the latter was a real salvation for Flick in the latter part of the season.
With Christensen's return, the competition for central defenders has become even more intense, especially since Jules Kunde is also a good option. In addition, the team has a reserve in Sergi Dominguez, who is expected to receive more playing time next season. Given this surplus in the position, the club decided to transfer Christensen.
It is clear that the absence of more than seven months of playing practice due to a tendon disease is a serious obstacle to finding a new club. However, the Danish defender himself does not rule out the possibility of a move if he receives an attractive offer.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club has already received an interesting offer from a Saudi Arabian club, probably Al-Nasr.
Recall that Christensen joined Barcelona in 2022 as a free agent, having previously played for Chelsea. Due to injury, the player has hardly played: he has played only six games this season and has not scored a single goal. Transfermarkt estimates the defender's transfer value at 15 million euros.
