Real Madrid intends to part ways with Austrian defender David Alaba from the Spanish team this summer in order to unload the wage bill and free up assets, reports the well-known publication AS.

According to the source, the player himself is not ready to leave the club and wants to work out his contract, which runs until June 30, 2026, in order to be in good shape for the World Cup starting next summer.

It is noted that the decision on the future of the 33-year-old Alaba depends on the rehabilitation process and recovery of the player. It was previously reported that the Austrian could miss a month due to a left calf muscle injury he suffered in late June.

Alaba is the second highest-paid defender in Europe and the third highest-paid player at the Madrid club, behind Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. According to media reports, the Austrian earns more than €415,000 per week (€1.88 million per month and €22.6 million per year before tax).

Alaba was out from December 2023 to January 2025, recovering from a torn cruciate ligament. Then, in February, the Real Madrid defender damaged his abductor muscle and in April, his meniscus. As a result, the 33-year-old made 14 appearances in all competitions last season.
