Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has spoken about his team's unexpected defeat in the first round of the Spanish La Liga against Barcelona's Espanyol. The match ended 1-2, but the red and whites were leading throughout the game.
"We lost the game and, above all, the result hurt us. But at the beginning of the season I have to rely on the visible good things. We need more realism in attack. Julian had a chance after a good team combination. A goal could have been scored. Football is amazing. They had a set piece, then they equalised, and then the second goal was scored immediately after that and you are down to zero."
The reason for the defeat? Everything is obvious. The opponent used their moments well: first from a standard play, then the 1:2 that really hurt us and deprived us of any chance of a win or a draw. This is part of our journey. This result hurts us, but it will help us improve and grow. I remain by all the good things about the team. We will work to correct the mistakes made,” Simeone was quoted as saying by the Spanish publication AS.
Simeone's men are currently in 16th place in La Liga. The Madrid team has no points. The "Tufts" are in sixth place with three points.
