Chelsea have announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager on their official website. The Spanish international will take up his duties on July 1. Alonso has signed a four-year contract. The Blues' statement said the 44-year-old will take on the role of manager, which carries greater responsibility than a manager's role.
"His appointment reflects the club's belief in his vast experience, coaching qualities and playing style, leadership qualities, character and integrity, which were key factors in the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea's development," the London club said in a statement.
Alonso's last job was at Real Madrid. He was the head coach of the "Royal" club from the summer of 2025 to January 2026.
